The sustainable Bocage


The bocage hedges of Normandy are incredible sustainable systems. Beeches, oaks, hawthorns and hazels are planted in a tall narrow wall-like fashion. Every year some trees are harvested for timber and firewood while many are left to keep the hedge going. In many places new hedges are laid, in others the mighty roots are made bare by the elements...
