Remembrance Sunday Poppies

Someone asked me the other day if poppies do really grow in Flanders fields.

They do, and in Normandy too. Here is a photo of red poppies in a field of wheat near the town of Falaise, where the battle for Normandy finished 70 years ago in 1944.

Marianne in Autumn

Light brown bust of Marianne, the symbol of the French Republic, stands out against the dark foliage behind. The column with Marianne on top was erected in 1889 to commemorate the first Centenary of the French Revolution. It stands in the market square in Vire, Calvados.

The French cockerel

A French cockerel recently won a court case against incomer neighbours who found their sleep disturbed. The cockerel has been France's national symbol since medieval times.

The hunting and fishing show at Carrouges
